Visual Effects Artistry at NYC’s High-End Shop Brings a Spark to :30 “Heist”
Posted: 01.15.2009 10:23
Nice Project: “Heist”, the newest :30 spot from Chase and agency mcgarrybowen is a high-concept look at how the credit card company zaps online fraud. The high-end visual effects shop Nice Shoes (www.niceshoes.com) used their VFX artistry to bring the undercover intrigue of “Heist” to life. The Artistic Approach: Chase and mcgarrybowen took a uniquely literal approach to demonstrating the fraud monitoring protection that Chase provides with every card. After a group of thieves breaks into a restricted area, they cut through a frosted glass window that is revealed to be the screen of a computer that they’ve infiltrated. The intruder gets shocked on contact when he attempts to grab the Chase card nestled on a woman’s keyboard, knocking him back through the screen and into cyberspace oblivion. Nice Shoes VFX artist John Shea set the scene with his Flame expertise, bringing extreme realism to the scene. “It was challenging to create a realistic relationship between the thief lurking through the hole in the computer, and the surrounding living environment he was trying to steal from,” Shea explains. “Another key element to the spot was creating the ‘card shock’ effect. The card is always composited as blue in a black-and-white world, which gives the card a powerful presence on the screen -- the sparks and shocks really had to have some weight to them to get the point across.” Nice Teamwork: The collaborative approach at Nice Shoes’ extremely inviting downtown studios helped Chase and mcgarrybowen to bring “Heist” together quickly. “The combined effort of everyone at Nice Shoes surrounds clients with a truly experienced creative group,” says Shea. “We were fortunate enough to be involved in this project from the very beginning – as soon as we saw the initial storyboards we knew that this was going to be a great project to work on, and also a lot of fun.”
