In the latest of several top-level personnel announcements from Nice Shoes, Mike Donovan has been named Managing Director of the company. Formerly, Donovan filled that role at Guava, Nice Shoes’ VFX subsidiary, which merged with its parent company two months ago. Previously, Nice Shoes announced the appointment of Aron Baxter as Creative Director and Jack Fahey as Head of Sales. “I’m very excited to be the new Managing Director of Nice Shoes,” says Donovan. “This is an interesting time for the business: Things are changing, and we’re changing, too. Nice Shoes has been very successful as a high-end post house for well over a decade. Now, since the merger, Nice Shoes is becoming known as a top VFX company as well. What clients loved before about Nice Shoes has only been enhanced with the addition of Guava’s staff and VFX capabilities, all under one roof. As Managing Director, Donovan will oversee day-to-day operations at Nice Shoes, interface with sales and production, and coordinate the company’s branding. “We’ve rolled out a new website and logo, we’re in the midst of giving the physical interior a facelift, and letting the industry know there’s definitely something different about Nice Shoes,” Donovan says. “We’re changing people’s perception of us and attracting clients we never had before.” After beginning his career with Manhattan Transfer, Donovan spent 10 years at Charlex, first as a Senior Producer and then as the Executive Producer of Launch, Charlex’s previz company that he also helped to spin off. Donovan subsequently joined Guava where he was Managing Director for the last two-and-a-half years. The final project for Guava under Donovan’s tenure was the stellar photoreal CG spec spot, “BlackBerry Bullet,” which became an Internet sensation earlier this year. In the spot, the new BlackBerry Storm smart phone metaphorically explodes the iPhone’s market dominance when a photoreal 3D blackberry fired into a rosy apple emerges from the other side in pristine condition. The biggest viral campaign so far this year, the spec spot drew 1.5 million views. “The announcements about Aron, Jack and myself – and further announcements to come – show what an amazing collective of talent has now been consolidated under the Nice Shoes banner,” Donovan says. “It’s a new era for Nice Shoes, and I’m delighted to be part of it.”
