Color Graded By Chris Ryan

Nice Shoes colorist Chris Ryan lent a hand to a GE real-people spot where employees seamlessly toss a “Wrench” from person to person across the company’s many divisions and locations. GE and its agency, BBDO/New York, are longtime clients of Ryan, who heads the telecine department of Nice Shoes. “They consistently produce some of the most beautiful spots I’ve worked on,” he reports. In “Wrench,” a worker at GE’s Lynn, Massachusetts’ aircraft engine assembly factory needs an eleven-sixteenths wrench. A man high on a wind turbine has one and tosses it to another GE employee who tosses it to yet another employee and so on down the line until it gets to the engine worker who requested it. In the process the wrench toss involves employees at GE Energy’s gas turbine factory in Greenville, South Carolina and GE Healthcare in Waukesha, Wisconsin. “From designing some of the cleanest and most fuel-efficient jet engines to building more wind turbines than anyone in the country, people at GE are working together creating innovation today for America tomorrow,” says the voiceover. Ryan performed the final transfer of the commercial’s 35mm film which was shot by DP Tony Wahlberg and directed by Lenny Dorfman. “I’ve worked with both of them for a long time,” says Ryan. “I’ve known Tony since I was a junior colorist and he was a second unit AC. For this spot they wanted to go pretty natural – they didn’t want too much of a ‘look’ but they didn’t want a handheld documentary feel either.” The colorist was challenged to deliver a natural look to footage which had been shot in several different exterior and interior locations. “The rough cut was beautifully edited and flowed really well,” he says. “Tony was at the transfer with Lenny and the agency, and everyone was open to discussion before the session began. Tony told me what they tried to accomplish with each shot and suggested where I could bring out certain elements to enhance the footage.” Ryan’s telecine suite is equipped with a Thomson Specter telecine and FilmLight’s Baselight color correction system. “Baselight was developed as a DI system, and it puts all material in cut order,” he notes. “That was especially helpful for ‘Wrench’ because I could see the spot flow and color correct it that way. It made the process so much easier.”
