When Nice Shoes began work on a series of financially challenged independent films last year, they approached the projects in a unique way: as creative partners fiscally invested in the films’ success as executive producers. Rather than agreeing to take on any available project, Nice Shoes CFO/COO Julia Kisla would identify promising films and negotiate a revenue-sharing agreement, essentially trading their creative services for a share of profits at a later date. The process proved so successful that Nice Shoes – which continues to focus primarily on high-end, big-budget projects done under more traditional contracts – has now created an exciting, new revenue stream. The films range from the quirky documentary tale of performance artist, cabaret singer, and drag artist Joey Arias in Arias With a Twist to the soon to be released Forgetting the Girl. These entries into the indie pantheon have experienced inordinate success: Arias screened at the renowned Berlin International Film Festival, is slated for its U.S. premiere at Tribeca and will be stopping at Sundance and Cannes, amongst others. This is just one of the award-winning projects Nice Shoes has worked on recently: Director Mai Iskander’s highly touted Garbage Dreams ran through the festival circuit and earned a short-list nomination for the Oscars. “With several memorable projects now behind us, this revenue-sharing model has become an interesting part of Nice Shoes’ business model,” noted Kisla. “By carefully selecting appealing projects with financial potential, we can strategically offer our services now for a sometimes substantial return later. We’ve been fortunate to partner with some extraordinary directors on our first several projects and we look forward to watching the indie scene closely so we can cultivate similar films in the future.” As the new partnerships have unfolded, Nice Shoes has assumed an expansive role beyond their traditional focus on post production, acting as a creative partner throughout the production process. This dynamic allows the company to contribute to nearly every aspect of the project, from budgeting to creative on-set input. “Trading talent now for potentially higher pay later is becoming more and more common in all areas of production – even top acting talent works this way sometimes,” stated Kisla. “With production costs constantly rising, Nice Shoes expects to strike more of these profit-sharing deals in lieu of traditional contracts. Post alone can gobble up 50 percent of a film’s production budget, making it necessary to diversify costs over multiple entities. The new model is a win-win: the production company – often a low-budget independent filmmaker – gets top-notch post work, and Nice Shoes continues to see rewards for their work long after we wrap production.” As the process continues to develop, Nice Shoes is maximizing the potential for success working on a case-by-case basis with a dynamic and flexible approach to new projects.
