Nice Shoes colorist Marcy Robinson’s work is featured in several acclaimed 2024 films that were recognized during this past weekends Academy Awards ceremony. These titles include A Real Pain, a poignant dramedy, Sugarcane, an eye opening documentary, and Death By Numbers, a timely and emotional documentary short.

Marcy colored A Real Pain, which was written, directed, and stars Jesse Eisenberg. Eisenberg plays opposite Kieran Culkin’s eye-catching livewire performance. This film follows two cousins on a Jewish heritage tour through Poland, exploring themes of personal history, trauma, and family tensions. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, A Real Pain won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and received widespread praise for its emotional narrative. The film was also nominated for two Academy Awards, with Culkin winning Best Supporting Actor.

Robinson also contributed to Sugarcane, a documentary directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, which examines the Canadian Indian residential school system. The film premiered at Sundance in January 2024, earning the Grand Jury Award for Directing and praise for its powerful storytelling. Sugarcane won Best Documentary at the National Board of Review and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Additionally, Robinson worked on Death by Numbers, a short documentary directed by Kim A. Snyder about a Parkland school shooting survivor. Marcy Robinson colored Sorry, Baby, the sharp and poignant directorial debut of Eva Victor. Premiering at Sundance 2025, this black comedy was praised for its unique blend of dark humor and emotional depth. Written and directed by Victor, the film follows Agnes (played by Victor), an English professor navigating life after sexual assault. Sorry, Baby blends wit with vulnerability, offering an honest portrayal of trauma recovery.

The film’s clever writing and inventive structure earned Victor the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and A24 acquired worldwide distribution rights.

Nice Shoes’ Marcy Robinson also worked on André Is an Idiot, a poignant documentary directed by Tony Benna. Premiering at Sundance 2025, the film follows André Ricciardi, a San Francisco man diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, as he humorously and vulnerably explores mortality. Through his irreverent lens, André reflects on his life choices, including his failure to get a colonoscopy. Blending humor with raw emotion, André Is an Idiot won the Sundance audience award. Marcy’s color work enhances the documentary’s visual storytelling, supporting its quirky and deeply human narrative about facing life’s inevitable journey with humor and love.

Reuniting with Kim A. Snyder after their collaboration on Death By Numbers, Marcy Robinson’s expert color grading enhances the storytelling of The Librarians, an eye-opening documentary film. Premiering at Sundance, The Librarians examines the rising movement to ban books in schools and the pivotal role librarians are playing in pushing back against censorship. The documentary highlights the courageous efforts of librarians who face harassment, job loss, and threats for defending intellectual freedom.
